The Clues God Leaves in Creation

The Clues God Leaves in Creation

Have we ever really stopped to think about what it means that everything we see came from God? The universe came from Him. The animals came from Him. Humanity came from Him. Even the unseen beings we read about in Scripture came from Him. If all these things came from a God whose greatness is unsearchable, then creation itself should leave us with questions, and perhaps creation contains clues.

Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.

The mystery of the creation of man and woman

Look at man and woman. God did not create two meaningless forms and simply place them beside one another. He created male and female, and Scripture tells us that both were made in His image and likeness. That likeness is not a suggestion that man is God, nor that God possesses a human body, yet there are qualities, capacities, responsibilities, and possibilities placed within humanity that point beyond humanity itself. The man carries qualities we associate with strength, responsibility, judgment, authority, protection, and the ability to carry and provide the seed of life. The woman carries qualities we associate with nurture, tenderness, wisdom, mercy, and the capacity to receive, carry, and nurture life. Together, they cause us to wonder about the One whose image they bear, almost as though God distributed reflections of His attributes throughout His creation.

The Hiddenness of God in His creation

Even the Hebrew language gives us something to pause over. Ish is "man," while ishah is "woman," and when we look more closely at the formation of these words, we begin to notice something that invites us to look beyond the surface. Within these words are letters that point us toward Yah, the shortened form associated with the divine name. The yod found in ish and the heh found in ishah, when brought together, give us Yah (יה). Perhaps this is another one of those hidden clues God leaves within creation. The man and the woman are distinct, yet their very formation points us back to the One who created them, as though God leaves an imprint of Himself within what He has made, quietly directing our attention back to Him.

And then we come to something even more mysterious. God gave the woman a place in which the hidden work of bringing life forth takes place: the womb. The man carries the seed. The woman carries the environment in which that seed develops into life. God established an environment that humanity cannot simply reproduce by its own authority; we can participate in the process, but we cannot command life into existence by our own power.

The act of God creative power

And what is this mysterious place called? The womb. The Hebrew word rechem means womb, and interestingly, it belongs to the same word family associated with racham, carrying the sense of compassion, mercy, and tender affection. That makes the womb worth stopping over. It is not merely a biological location but a hidden place where life is formed, unseen by human eyes, yet where something extraordinary is taking place. Perhaps this is another one of those little clues God has left in creation.

The more we look, the more we realise that creation is filled with things that point beyond themselves. Perhaps God does not reveal everything about Himself directly. Perhaps He leaves traces, little clues, and if we are willing to look closely enough, creation can leave us standing before the same conclusion David reached: "His greatness is unsearchable." There is still more to discover.

Creation testifies that He Exists
Even creation knows its creator
